I have two jobs; I work Monday through Wednesday doing web and graphic design, with the occasional video work. On Thursday through Saturday, I work at the customer service department for Pearson. I affectionately call these offices "the Party Office" and "the Other Office" respectively.

At the Other Office, I have a little project going called Free "Art". I have a sign outside of my cubicle. Below it is a clip that holds the art. I doodle a lot, so I leave my doodles for people to take.

Well it's official: as of yet I'm incapable of holding a full time job and finding the eight to ten hours it takes me to conceive, write, draw, paint, and texture a page of Fishheadman. It was good fun, and I promise I'll come back to it when I can find the time.

In the meanwhile, there's a new project I'm starting called "Wizard Magic". It's all in pencil, and is completely stream of consciousness; Minimal plot, character design, and meaningful allusion. Just soulless, demon summoning 20-somethings in a magic house hastily drawn with a #2 pencil.

I'll be square with you. I have a job now, so FHM may be later than usual from time to time. I need time to adapt, and schedule ample time to unwind by playing Bioshock, because we must always prioritize.

The interesting thing about working what is considered full time in first-world countries other than this one is I have a lot more time for contemplation upon the FHM universe, and a lot less time for execution. Having a job that requires so much monotony that my body literally takes over means that I have ample room for my mind to wander. In the past week I wrote the first seven pages for a new D20 Modern campaign setting, thumbnailed the most totally epic page of Fishheadman, made some excellent, spoilerific concept art for later in the story, and wrote the script for two pages.

This coming page is going to be slick as hell. The script has undergone some rewrites and I had ample time to work around the layout and dialog in my head and on paper. I even have a lot more of FHM's backstory laid out.

As soon as I figure out a way to draw at work (which believe me, is gonna happen) we'll be seeing a leap in FHM activity. One advantage I have is that I'm left handed for drawing and right handed for everything else. So I can dial, manipulate the UI, and talk, all while drawing.

I've been mulling over a new format, knowing for certain that I want to change it. My thoughts have come down to whether I want it to be more comic book, or more comic strip; frankly, I've come to hate the current webcomic style. Not for webcomics in general, but for my own.

So the question comes down to this: Should I post black and white three panel strips two to three times a week with big colored strips every other week, or should I keep to the page a week schedule, but flip the page so it is standard comic format?

Wow! Well, another busy week of not doing Fishheadman. But fear not! Much is lurking in the Fishheadmanitosis, a particular cluster of gray matter that only those born with 3 nipples wield.

Yeah, I feel bad that I've been holding out on providing you the sweet meats of Fishheadman. At the moment I lack the inspiration and professional capacity to "force it". But I won't hold out on you. I promise you'll get something each week while the Fishheadman part of the brain (somewhere, I'm told, between the oblongata and the cervical cortex) gets some much needed R&R.

The truth is I've been thick in research for another project I'm working on. I'm writing an alternative history steampunk horror novel that requires knowledge of 17th century English history, alchemy, roman history, Zoroastrianism, and the Cthulhu Mythos.

Believe me when I tell you I'm balls deep in wikipedia, discovering things I've never known I needed to know. It's very exciting to discover how fascinating history is when it's not being rhythmically ejaculated monotonously into your face by a teacher who earns minimum wage and loathes his or her students for it.

In regards to this 'treat' I lay before you, I am in no way slandering the vastly noble hispanic people by waylaying their mythically delicious foodstuffs upon the head of a naked shark man. My only intent is to maximize the flavor, by attuning it to the frequency at which my mind explodes in a babbling, idiotic flow of pseudo-creativity. When I eat a taco, the world changes before me, expanding for the few fleeting, crunchy moments before I gulp it down. And I needed to share that with you.

17: Dare to Dream

I've always loved eavesdropping on the frayed sentences that are uttered from the mouths of dreamers. These precious lines of dialog seem to wrap around the brain, folding itself into an incoherence that cannot possibly be remembered by either the speaker or those lucky enough to hear.

Naturally the only thing you can do when such a situation arises is to attempt to engage in a conversation with the speaker. One may hope to learn of some universal truth that will expand their mind, or perhaps pinpoint the exact location of slumbering Cthulhu's lair. But no. If you're lucky, you might be entertained for a few fleeting moments. But usually the person wakes up and immediately lambastes you for being creepy.

I recently saw the film Wild Zero with some friends. It is quite simply amazing. Every scene is hand crafted to be as campy as possible, hamming it up to such an extent that I'm pretty sure Bruce Campbell has had a permanent erection since the year 2000, when the film was first released in Japan.

In commemoration of the obvious inspiration for the film, I created a motivational poster, which immediately found it's way on Fishheadman's wall because, after all, he is a drug dealer. With a functionless mask depicting a fish permanently affixed to his head. And the ghost of a failed musician for a side kick...
I'm starting to realize how ridiculous that sounds...

16: Lucidity

Sorry this one is so late. I haven't been feeling it lately, I need to get back in the groove. I'm changing the schedule to weekends, as I always seem to be too busy when tuesday rolls around.

This is mainly due to the d20 modern zombie game I'm running. It's about zombies in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. It's kind of nutty, but I kind of have to design games on a semi regular basis or I go nuts.

This one is way late, but I am quite satisfied with the outcome. I saw Spiderman 3 (very bad), then played the Wii (very good).

I am, and always have been, of two minds concerning marijuana. On the one hand, there are very clear benefits for those who use it medicinally, and I know enough people who use it regularly and somehow manage to function normally. On the other hand, when I've used marijuana, I've had serious issues with short and long term memory, and I've had the motivation drain right out of me like it was never there.

The last time I used marijuana, I went in totally serious about learning to code in Basic. When all was said and done, I no longer had the burning desire to learn anything, let alone a complicated mathematical language. That's when I realized that while marijuana might be ok for some people, it's not ok for me.

However, I have very libertarian values, and I believe people should be allowed to do anything they want to as long as it doesn't harm anyone else.

It turned out he reads my comic. I was so flattered that some random dude was a fan that I didn't even get his name. So if you're reading this, sorry I didn't ask your name, random dude.

At the same party, Brandon guessed correctly that Fishheadman has other abilities that have yet to be revealed. How very shrewd of you, Beaver.

Some where out there on the interwebs, there is a video of me bouncing a statue of one of the wise men off a trampoline into a friend, while screaming "I got your gift right here!!"

9: Nightriderz

Bless me readers, for I have sinned. It has been 10 days since my last update.

The landlord called us in the middle of the week and announced he would be coming by to pick up some things from the attic. At the time, our house was a total mess, and we freaked right the fuck out.

Since then I have been busting my ass every waking hour cleaning the place, or recovering from exhaustion from doing so. So not so much with the Fishheadman. However, I've had much time to think about FHM and contemplate the increase of quality.

I tried a new technique with this page, and I'm quite pleased with the outcome. I drew the comic on a piece of graph paper, which allowed me to use the lines to measure things. Then I scanned it, cleaned it up, and adjusted the panels for optimum framing. After all this, I printed out the result, taped it to a piece of bristol board, and inked it on my light box. It's a variation on a technique Eric from Minimalist Stick Figure Theater told me about.

Next page, I do believe I'll try drawing different layers of the comic on different pages, to give it more of an animation feel, and allow me to really go into detail without making the colorization process a nightmare.

8: Welcome to the Vomitorium

This one took a lot less time to finish, which was a nice change of pace from page 7. I've changed my method yet again, implementing the light box in a battle of the pencil against the ink.

My friend Eric, proprietor of Minimalist Stick Figure Theater, holds movie nights on occasion, and last night was definitely the best so far. We watched The Shadow, which was pure comedy gold, and Adam brought a crazy spaghetti zombie film that featured a miniature 30 year old playing an 8 year old. I busted a nut laughing the first time I saw him, and things just got worse from there.

The best line of the night goes to Kyle when, during the Shadow, we viewed a message flying through a complicated network of pneumatic tubes and Kyle said "It's the internet!"

Second place goes to whoever said "Meanwhile, on the set of Brazil" immediately afterwards. I'm pretty sure that was Dan.

I sometimes fantasize about what I will say on my next Fishheadman post, but when it comes time to write, I just want to get the damn comic up.

7: The Fuzz

No, seriously. I've been sick. What's your excuse?? ...Sorry, I'm being defensive, I know. That wasn't fair and I'm sorry.

Expect things to pick up from here on out. We are officially past the birthing stage. Thank you for letting me give birth into your eyes. Thank you. I'll never forget this...
...moment.

I like how this panel explodes over the whole house. It really breaks out of the past few that have all been dialog in the bathroom. I hope the pacing isn't too painful. If there is one flaw every linear webcomic has, it's that they all seem to drag on forever. There's precedence, dammit! The pacing issue has a lot to do with the page by page delivery. When you buy a comic, you get to read every page at once.

I dug out my old light box, so I'm going to try something a little different. We'll see if it pans out with the next page. This is an evolving process that's every bit about me getting good at this as it is about me telling a story.

6: In Which Our Hero Discovers the Lot of an Artist

This one took a lot longer than it had any right to, due to extenuating circumstances. It seems like I scanned the page ages ago.

The story is starting to pick up. I've introduced the main characters, and soon we'll be exploring the setting. Fishheadman takes place in a world similar, yet different from our own. Different in the same way the Japanese Spiderman TV show was from the tales we're familiar with. Though I can 87% guarantee Fishheadman will not involve giant robots. The possibility exists, but I'm opposed to giant robots on general principle. There is a line where the size of an automated humanoid simply becomes redundant.

I get a lot of my ideas from current events. I am a news junkie, to which the staggering number of podcasts on my aggregator can attest. I swear, I don't even listen to music on my iPod anymore, except for the occasional Brian Eno when I can't seem to fall asleep.

Yesterday was my favorite girl Elizabeth's birthday. I hope Fishheadman becomes profitable at some point so I can buy her nice things instead of photoshopping pictures of my scantily clad form bursting out of a birthday cake and printing said images on photopaper.

I have some ideas for promotional materials that I will be producing eventually so I can pimp the comic at conventions and eventually sell said merchandise.

5: RE:ANS (HZB)

Here's a picture of my workspace for anyone interested.

I'm listening to Robert Reich at the Commonwealth Club of California right now. How he lost to Mitt Romney is a fucking mystery to me. You western mass bucktoothed pony fucking farmers should be ashamed of yourselves.

What I like about this page is that, along with a tasteful gag about zombie fuckin', is that I sneaked in the date. The back cover features an advertisement for American Lifts, which are the best damn lifts on the planet. I have had every lift I've need covered by these guys. That's a lot of lifting!

The only thing that could be better about the ad is if the motto was "We produce products that produce productivity."

I've been watching a great TV show called "Invasion" that some how slipped under the radar of the Lost/Heroes/Surface set. The shows pace is artfully executed, the characters are equally believable and interesting, with back stories that are revealed without the ham handed flashbacks of Lost. If you want a really good show that tells a story, I suggest you check it out.

4: The Ghost of Billy Hero

Rolling right along. Expect page five in a hot minute. Give or take a few days.

This one was the stumbling block, the page I wasn't looking forward to doing. There's no real 'gag' to this one. I wanted to focus on introducing the new character, and lost sight of any kind of joke.

Despite being a comedy, Fishheadman is, first and foremost, an adventure story, and there will be times where humor is sacrificed in the name of that vengeful and almighty deity, Plot.

I swear to god, last night I was thinking how I could wait another day before putting out another page. Then I immediately saw that thought for the threat it was; I know first hand how that kind of laziness leads to the death of a project, if it doesn't neutralize the inchoate seed of the idea instantaneously, like some kind of radioactive mental abortion, or a turtle birth on Seagull Island.

So I did it even though I didn't want to. It was pulling teeth for the first bit of it, but I get into a flow, where I lose track of time and just enjoy tooling around with my drawings in photoshop.

Now I've watched the sun rise from the wrong side of the the bed. Sleep eludes me, but Fishheadman and the Ghost of Billy Hero do not.

3: Kneel Before the Throne

And so the source of the stench is revealed. As you may have guessed by the last panel, I'll be introducing a new character next page. Things are about to take a very odd turn.

I want to wish my Mom happy 50th. Having recently turned 25 myself, I know how weird it is to be able to measure your life in quarters, let alone a half of a century. Many more mom. Seriously. You have to be 100, at least.

The graphic designers out there might notice the size for my pages changes each page; rest assured, I've settled on a format now. Every page will be this size from here on.

2: Where is Billy Hero?

Page 2 is earlier than I promised. While I intend to stick to an "at least one page a week" rule, I will sometimes post more than one a week.

Expect to see a sharp decline in quality when FHM leave's Billy's house. It'll be jaunty and awkward for the first few pages, but I will quickly get the hang of it. It seems likely that textures will be a little more difficult to apply in an out door setting. We shall see...

"Fishheadman" is a weekly comic that follows Fishheadman and friends. If you ever wondered what Duck Tales would have been if Hunter S. Thompson and William S. Burroughs were on the writing staff, then by all means, read Fisheadman.
